The Importance of the Wedding Ceremony Speech

The wedding ceremony speech is one of the most important parts of your wedding day. This speech is given by the officiant prior to the exchange of vow and varies depending on your religious tradition and personal preference. If you are of a particular religious persuasion, your officiant may have a speech that he always gives at weddings. For example, a Christian wedding will include prayer and reading of Scripture in addition to a speech that talks about the sacred joining of husband and wife in a Biblical way. A Jewish wedding will include readings from the Torah and may also include Hebrew prayer.

But what can you do if you are not religious or are not having a religious ceremony? In this case, there are a great many alternatives. You can go for a speech that talks about the civil responsibilities and importance of marriage from a non-religious standpoint. The speech can talk about the sacred meaning of marriage without touching on anything religious. You can choose to have a speech that is spiritual but does not refer to any one spiritual tradition. If you are in a relationship with someone who is a different faith than you are, you may want to have two speeches given by a Unitarian officiant or even two officiants.

If you are having trouble coming up with a speech for your wedding, speak with the officiant. He or she may already have something in mind which you can alter to suit your preferences. You may also want to do some research on the Internet. Another option is to check out some books about wedding planning. There are books devoted to the subject of wedding speeches and even reception speeches.

Your wedding ceremony speech should be personal and special. You may also want it to be traditional and reflect your cultural and spiritual beliefs. If you haven't yet decided on your speech, check out the following books which can help you with your planning: Wedding Speeches & Toasts by Cassell Illustrated, Wedding Toasts and Speeches: Finding the Perfect Words by Jo Packham and Wedding Speeches: A Book of Example Speeches by Gordon Stretch. While you may not want to copy the exact words from a book, titles like these can get you started thinking about the words you want to hear at your wedding ceremony.
