A Brief Guide to Wedding Ceremony Protocol
|
If you are planning a traditional wedding, there is some wedding ceremony protocol you should know about. The first part of proper protocol is understanding the processional order. First, the officiant, groom and best man will take their places at the altar. After that, the groomsmen will enter. Sometimes, depending on your preferences, they will be accompanied by a the bridesmaids. Or, the bridesmaids will make a separate entrance. After the groomsmen make their entrance the bridesmaids will walk down the aisle if they did not already do so.
After the bridesmaids have taken their walk down the aisle the flower girl will walk down the aisle and scatter flower petals behind her. Now it is time for the maid or matron of honor to make her entrance. At this point, the music will change to the Wedding March and the bride will enter on the arm of her father or other escort who is giving her away. The guests are expected to stand in honor of the bride. Another part of protocol is where everyone is going to be seated. This varies according to your religious faith.
In the Christian tradition, the left side of the church is for the bride's family and friends while the right side is for the groom's family and friends. In addition to the seating, there are other parts of the ceremony that are traditional in nature. For example, the bride should place her engagement ring on her right hand until the wedding band is placed on her left hand. As far as the bouquet, it should be handed from the bride to the matron of honor after her veil has been lifted and she has been kissed on the cheek by her father or escort.
If you are unfamiliar with wedding ceremony protocol, some research is in order. Of course, if you are using a wedding planner they will educate you about how things should go depending on your religion and preferences. If you are not using a wedding planner you can learn a great deal about protocol in wedding planner books. Here are some titles you may want to consider: Emily Post's Wedding Etiquette by Peggy Post, The New Book of Wedding Etiquette: How to Combine the Best Traditions with Today's Flair by Kim Shaw and Essential Guide to Wedding Etiquette by Sharon Naylor.
