Understanding the Order of Wedding Ceremony

The order of wedding ceremony is an important part of tying the knot. When it comes to a traditional wedding, there is a certain order in which things are done. The first part of the ceremony is the prelude, where music is played and the guests enter the church. They are seated by the ushers. After this, the grandparents and parents are led to their special sets by the ushers. The music will change at this point, and the wedding party will enter. The flower girl will walk down the aisle and scatter petals for the bride to step on, followed by the maid of honor and the bridesmaids.

The bridal march music will be played, and the bride will walk down the aisle escorted by her father or the man she has chosen to 'give her away.' When the bride takes her place beside the groom, the minister will then give a brief speech about the sanctity of marriage which begins with the phrase Dearly Beloved. After the speech he will ask who gives this woman in marriage to this man, at which time the bride's father and mother will speak up and say 'I do' or 'We do.' After this, the minister will speak further about the sacredness of marriage which will take a few minutes. Following this speech will be the exchange of vow.

The exchange of vow can be traditional or eclectic. The minister may speak the traditional vows and have the bride and groom say 'I do.' Or, the bride and groom may repeat their vows after the minister has spoken them. Another alternative may be personal vows that the bride and groom have written themselves. After the exchange of vow comes the exchange of rings. The ring exchange also includes spoken vows repeated after the officiant. Following the ring exchange, there may be a lighting of the unity candle or a simple closing speech by the minister. The very last words of a wedding ceremony are usually 'You may kiss the bride.'

You may vary the order of the wedding ceremony to suit your needs. Following the ceremony is the reception, which has an order all its own. Many receptions include speeches by the bride, groom, parents, maid of honor and best man. There may also be dancing, dining and of course the ceremonial cutting of the wedding cake.
