The Traditions of Baptist Wedding Ceremonies

If someone is a Baptist, that means they are a Christian of the Baptist denomination. Baptist is one of the many denominations found in the Christian faith. Baptist wedding ceremonies are most always formal affairs with certain protocol that is followed. The first step in this type of wedding is the ushering in of the VIPs. The VIPs are the parents and grandparents of the bride and groom. The bride's family is seated on the left, and the groom's family is seated on the right. After the VIPs are seated the guests are ushered in. Next, the groom and officiant enters and takes their places at the head of the altar.

Next, the groomsmen and bridesmaids enter, almost always arm-in-arm. After that comes the flower girl and ring bearer. The flower girl and ring bearer are traditionally young children. The ring bearer holds the rings on a pillow while the flower girl scatters petals behind her. After they enter, the maid or matron of honor walks down the aisle, often on the arm of a groomsman. The processional music will stop after this and the Wedding March music will begin. The bride enters on the arm of her father or male escort and the guests stand in honor.

The bride and her escort walk down the aisle and she takes her place next to the groom. The groom lifts her veil and her bouquet is handed to the maid or matron of honor. At this point the officiant does a welcoming prayer and speech. After that, the vows are spoken. The officiant speaks the vows and the bride and groom repeat them. The rings are exchanged and additional vows are spoken. An additional prayer and speech may be given, followed by the lighting of the Unity candle by the bride and groom. After the lighting of the Unity candle comes the closing prayer and speech followed by the first kiss between husband and wife.

Baptist wedding ceremonies are often followed by a reception that includes speeches which are given by the bride, groom, parents, maid of honor and best man. There is also a meal served and of course, wedding cake. While there is often music and dancing at the average wedding reception you will often find this is not the case with a Baptist reception due to the religious beliefs and rules of the faith.
